SEnDA: Development of Intelligent Technologies for Large-Height Wind Turbine System
OBJECTIVES AND RESULTS
In the search for more competitive energy sources, it has been demonstrated that using higher-power turbines for wind energy generation results in a lower LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy). The turbines announced for future onshore markets exceed 5-6 MW, while offshore turbines surpass these capacities, reaching around 12-15 MW. In this context, there is a clear need to find new technically and economically feasible structural solutions that enable greater hub heights for the next generation of multi-megawatt wind turbines.
The general objective of SEnDA is to address the challenges faced by the wind industry in the development of a new generation of high-capacity wind turbines (starting from 5 MW) and unprecedented heights (up to 200 meters), through the development of new intelligent control and monitoring technologies, and their validation in a real prototype.
To achieve this, new control strategies for high-capacity turbines operating at great heights are being developed, as well as technologies to reduce or mitigate vibrations induced by vortex shedding and the loads effectively borne by the wind turbine during assembly and operation. Additionally, strategies and technologies are being designed to maximize the lifespan of these new wind turbines. The project also includes the development of new high-altitude service systems that allow for the replacement of components without the need for a conventional crane.
As a result, the SEnDA project is expected to strengthen the wind industry in Navarra across its entire value chain through the development of new products and the generation of knowledge regarding the control of large-height wind turbines. This will culminate in the installation of the first onshore wind turbine in Spain with a hub height of 200 meters and a capacity exceeding 5 MW, using Navarra technology and located in a wind farm in Navarra (La Senda wind farm). Furthermore, SEnDA will contribute to achieving the main goal of Navarra’s green strategy (Navarra Green) by reinforcing the wind industry, strengthening the entire value chain of the renewable sector in Navarra, and developing and retaining specialized human talent in companies and technology centers in Navarra.
